Strange that Cliffhanger Productions wasn't on the list too. Probably just an oversite.

I noticed on list of polls, Riddle Rider's name shows as being last post on each thread, and in his profile these posts are listed, but they are not on
the boards. What happened?

And after entering my last post, it said something about a "screened post" saying it will be reviewed before appearing. ????

For some reason, the poll posts are coming up hidden. I'll check the security settings because that's not supposed to happen. Sorry about that guys. I
was confused myself until I signed in and saw that. I'll see if I can fix it right away.
Update: Yes, it was my screw up. Sorry guys. Won't happen again.

If I could have voted twice It would have been Mascot then Republic as the quality started with Nat Levine and merely changed names when Republic came into
being.

I went with Columbia for a couple of
reasons:
1) They produced my favourite serial - THE BATMAN (duh).
Batman (1943) Captain Midnight (1942) Holt of the Secret Service (1941) The Phantom (1943) The Secret Code (1942) Atom Man vs. Superman (1950)
The Spider's Web (1938) The Spider Returns (1941) The Green Archer (1940)

You absolutely have to get THE SPIDER'S WEB, it is Columbia's best serial, with a great hero, supporting cast, and unforgettable music score. This
and DRUMS OF FU MANCHU are about the only serials that really create a mood.

I voted for Universal because those were the serials I saw as a kid on NYC television. I grew up with Flash, Buck, Tim Tyler, Don Winslow, Red Barry and Radio
Patrol. I never knew there were Republic serials until I started collecting in the late 70s. While I agree that the Republics are more action packed, after a
while I get tired of dumb heroes moving in close to the henchmen so their guns can be knocked away so two or three fights per chapter can ensue. I think the
Universals had better plots but that's just my opinion.

Honestly, for all the abuse Universal and Columbia have been dealt over the years, both companies produced a number of good, solidly entertaining serials.
Especially Universal.
Consider the following titles from Universal: Ace Drummond Secret Agent X-9 (both) Flash Gordon Flash Gordon's Trip To Mars Gang Busters The Phantom Rider (1935) The Vanishing Shadow Jungle Jim Radio Patrol Riders of Death Valley The Roaring West Tim Tyler's Luck Junior G-Men All of which are pretty good serials. They have strong plots and pretty good performances. As to Columbia: Deadwood Dick Flying G-Men The Spider's Web The Secret Code The Batman The Phantom The Green Archer Holt of the Secret Service Brenda Starr, Reporter Valley of Vanishing Men Overland With Kit Carson Jungle Raiders Adventures of Sir Galahad Great Adventures of Captain Kidd The Desert Hawk That's a pretty substantial portion of their output, if you ask me. I'm also partial to Mandrake, The Magician, both Superman serials, and Batman and Robin from Columbia and The Phantom Creeps and the two Green Hornet serials from Universal. There once was an argument that the worst from Republic was better than anything from anyone else. Well, personally, I'd rather watch any of the serials I listed above than The Invisible Monster, Man With The Steel Whip, King of the Carnival, or Government Agents Vs. Phantom Legion. So, when you stop and think about it, maybe this poll isn't as much of a no-brainer as one would think!

I voted for Republic because I like their serials, while at the same time I think I looked forward to finding more Republics rather than Columbias &
Universals. I think as time has gone on, I think some Republics have diminished in my eyes (Vigilantes are Coming, Black Widow for example), while I have
enjoyed the style of Universals & Mascots a bit more.

I voted Republic because as a Saturday matinee kid that's all my little Kansas theater showed. I grew up with Republic serials and westerns and that is
what I know. In fact I did not even know Columbia and Universal made serials until I got reinterested in serials about ten years ago. I agree with HiYoSilver
in that as I see more and more serials some of the Republic efforts have diminished to my eye. Some of the Columbia and Universals, as I see them, have
improved.

When I was a kid in the early '60s, New York TV ran Republics and Universals in roughly equal numbers. I also saw one Mascot, PHANTOM EMPIRE, on TV. With
the exception of BATMAN, which I caught theatrically during its brief revival in 1966, I didn't see any Columbia serials until 1972, when I joined the NYC
film society Black Tiger and I frequented for many years.
I started buying Alan Barbour's magazines and books in 1966, and since he had a pronounced pro-Republic bias, I tended to lean that way as well. My childhood favorites included PERILS OF NYOKA, THE MASKED MARVEL, and MANHUNT OF MYSTERY ISLAND, so when Alan extolled the virtues of '40s Republics, I gave a lot of weight to his opinions. Eventually, as I saw more serials, my tastes changed. As I've said on both Grood's and Gravy's boards, fistfights in warehouses and exploding miniatures no longer hold the appeal they once held for me. |

I agree with RR about the exploding minatures. Does anyone have a count on the number of times that arch topped warehouse has blown up. How many vehicles
have gone over that cliff. How many times that gray coup has rammed that service station. While Republics are still my favorites I am enjoying Columbia,
Universal and some of the independents more and more.
Is that Mulholland Drive that has the hairpin curve. How many times have we seen that stretch of highway?
