Someone recently mentioned watching serials on vhs tape a hundred times. That is ridiculous but it started me thinking. What is the serial you have watched
the most and approximately how many times have you watched it? For me, my most watched serial is Flash Gordon and I'm guessing that I've watched it 20
times over the years.

My interest in comic books attracted me to serials and one of the first serials I watched was Adventures Of Captain Marvel. I got my first vcr in 1984 and
I've watched CM at least once or twice a year. You do the math. I never get tired of it.

I've collected copies of all the sound serials that are are readily available and I figger I'll be doing pretty darned good if I can watch 'em all
just once! That being said, I have seen the Zorro's, Flash's, Phantom Empire and Clipper Island multiple times, due to their popularity on broadcast
TV.

When I was in high school, I'd send $35 in wages per week from my Bloomingdale's paycheck to order a 16mm chapter from Blackie. Spy Smasher and Perils
of Nyoka were first and I watched them to death. This was the pre-vhs days and being able to watch these at home was quite the novelty.
Strangely, I've seen Radar Men from the Moon about four times now - a guilty pleasure for sure. |

even though it probably won't be on my top 10 list, it would have to be the 1943 Batman serial since I got it on VHS when I was about 13 years old (along
w/ the Batman and Robin serial) and since I preferred that serial to its follow-up, I would watch it at least once a year so I must have seen it about 7-8
times.

I don't keep count but King of the Rocketmen and Spy Smasher must be on the top of my list.

Since I have had the Good Times VHS versions of BATMAN, BATMAN AND ROBIN and THE MASKED MARVEL, for well over 25 years, those are my top three. BATMAN and THE MASKED MARVEL more so than B&R. I have had a copy of CAPTAIN AMERICA on VHS for over 20 years, as well. Probaly watched that one more than B&R, too. I have seen each one easily 10 times. BATMAN a couple more, not suprisingly to anyone. |

I'd have to say its a 4 way tie: Overland with Kit Carson (Because it was the first serial I ever saw when it was a re-release back in the 50's),
followed by The Fighting Devil Dogs, then, Zorro's Fighting Legion, and finally The Masked Marvel. I have watched these 4 I know at least 5 to 10 times
each and still every now and then watch specific favorite chapters.

My most frequently watched serial would have to be FLASH GORDON, if only because it was the most accessible. All three
Flash Gordon serials were readily accessible, although I've seen the first more often than the other two. For many years they ran almost continuously on
New York television. And by the time I started collecting 16mm film, it was easy to buy dupe prints of very good quality from a local dealer/collector
affectionately known as "the Mad Ghoul." I often ran my print for friends and co-workers.
Another serial I saw frequently was CAPTAIN MARVEL. In the early '70s it seemed to be everywhere. One theatrical distributor here in the NY / NJ area included Chapter One of CM in a two-hour program headlined by REEFER MADNESS, which helped kick off the "Midnight Movie" craze. During my freshman year in college (1971-72), that program played in a nearby town every Friday night for weeks, and I went several times with various friends and classmates. I finally saw the serial complete at the 1972 NYC ComiCon. Caught most of it again the following year at the nostalgia-oriented Saturday-matinee film series at Town Hall, and yet again a few months later at Manhattan's Elgin Theater, a revival house that ran it one Saturday night as an all-night show, from midnight to six a. m., with cartoons played between chapters. Shortly after that, a good friend of mine bought a 16mm print, which I borrowed from him several times over the next five or so years. And when Nostalgia Merchant finally made CM available legitimately, at the dawn of the video era, I was one of the first to buy a VHS copy from them. So I probably saw MARVEL ten times in as many years. I didn't revisit it until Republic Home Video brought it out on laserdisc circa 1990, but I've probably watched the thing another handful of times since then.
